MATHEMATICS IN THE WORKPLACE
CONTEST #2
FOR STUDENTS GRADES 2-12

WASHINGTON STATE MATHEMATICS COUNCIL
WANTED: Student-written articles about people who use mathematics in their jobs.
TEACHERS: Ask your students to interview such a person and write an example of a math problem that would be used in the course of the person's work. Students do not have to understand the problem themselves. The winners will be selected based on the rules below.
RULES:

A mathematical problem from the workplace, clearly and completely described. Explain what the problem is about, how it is used in the workplace, and how it relates to mathematics. A solution to the problem is not needed in the entry.

PRIZES:
There will be a winner at each of three levels: Grades 2-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12.
Each winner will receive $50.
DEADLINE: Articles must be postmarked no later than May 15, 1999. Winners will be notified by June 15, 1999. Mail submissions or requests for further information to:
